We recommend ordering this item WHEN the egg case hatches. The hydei culture will then take about two weeks to begin production (depending on temperature). The extra hydei flies that you receive with your order can be used to alternate feedings between the two types of fly - melanogaster and hydei. As production of hydei begins, switch to all hydei and other prey.

Drosophila Hydei is the scientific name for this fly. Our flies are genetically altered so their wing muscles are too weak to support flight. This item includes a feeding culture in which the flies will reproduce, allowing you to propagate hundreds and hundreds of fruit flies over the lifetime of the culture.
